Thanksgiving Weekend Falmouth Portraits

I had the pleasure of photographing these handsome boys the day after Thanksgiving. It was for their grandmother whose home will be on the 35th Annual West Falmouth Library Holiday Home Tour coming up on Sunday, December 11th. The two older boys are six year old twins and they are full of personality. The little one is their cousin. The funniest thing about the session were the seven adults in attendance as their entourage. We had fun making noises for the little one to react to. The weather was great and the boys were a delight!

I photographed Kristin last fall for her senior portraits. She's so pretty I used her portrait on my web site. Kristin recently graduated Falmouth High School and will be attending college in Boston, home of the Bruins!! As part of my senior portrait sessions, I include a complimentary family session. We chose the same beach I used for her senior portraits. It's a beautiful, protected harbor. Her mother looks more like her sister. The two have a special relationship. It's a honor to be their family photographer.

The Captain's Manor Inn is a beautiful Bed & Breakfast down the road a mile from my studio. The owners, Trish & Kevin, have wanted me to take some exterior photos but it had rained so much in May. Finally, we had a break in the weather and I was able to have an hour of beautiful spring sunshine. The grounds and the inn are just lovely. Right off the Village Green in downtown Falmouth. It is an elegant place to stay.

The weather turned out pretty well last weekend even when the forecaster predicted otherwise. Susan treated herself to a late Mother's Day present by asking for portraits of her loved ones. It was super low tide which gave us access to areas I normally can't get to. I was great to be back at the beach doing what I love.

Spring has not sprung here on Cape Cod yet. It was snowing/sleeting yesterday and really quite cold today.
I am still photographing in the studio. Here's a recent session.
It was tough going, at first, with the two year old Miss Bailey, but then we all started signing and she got right into being a perfect little model. We had a lot of fun and some very memorable portraits. Her Auntie lives in Mexico so it really was special for all to be together. I love when generations get together and hug, squeeze and laugh while I snap away.

The Season is Winding Down

It's been a really great season photographing at the beach this year. The season is winding down and the beach grass will be turning brown soon and I will suspend my beach sessions until next May.
Here's a recent young family I had the pleasure of photographing three years ago and now they've added another adorable child. It was a little chilly that day but the kids were great and we had the beach all to ourselves.

Senior Season-Welcome Class of 2011

It's back to school for so many kids. For the ones posted here, it's their last year of high school. A year to remember, a year to cherish. I love High School Senior Season. I get to be young and hang out with kids/adults with their futures ahead of them.
My Senior Special is the price of a regular session, $175, and I include a family portrait session as well. It taken at the same time as the senior session or at a later time. If the family can't get together, it can be transferred as a gift to a friend or family. The deadline for the session is June 30, 2011.

Plans Don't Always Work Out

Today is the 32nd Annual Falmouth Village Arts and Crafts Street Festival. I have been an exhibitor for over 8 years. I thought they would postpone it like they did last year due to the weather. There's a huge system coming and it will rain heavily later. I am missing it this year. I'm missing it because at 2pm yesterday my middle back went into a painful spasm. I went directly to the Chiropractor and he fixed me up but I still hurt and feel like someone kicked me in the back. There was no way I could load my tent and photographs and everything it takes to display what I love to do. I LOVE the Street Fair. I get to see people I haven't seen in years and get hugs and compliments all day. It's the best! I also raise money for Haven For Healing, a local Cancer support group that helped me tremendously 2 years ago when I was undergoing treatment. Even though I cannot be there, I am still offering my Portrait Special I do to raise money for them. Donate $125 to Haven for Healing, P.O. Family Fun!

I was so lucky when Mike, vacationing from California, called recently on a Tuesday. His family were all here from all over the country to celebrate the last college graduation of his youngest daughter. What better to have a memorable session and portrait of a family milestone.
We met at Chapaquiot Beach where the tide was high and there was a pretty stiff breeze. We used a few locations and had fun. It was a little nippy but they wrapped up and enjoyed the very fresh Cape air.
Mike and his wife came in three days later and chose what will be going over their fireplace mantle in their bedroom. They said that now their bedroom is finished. The last portrait they did was when the kids were very young. I'm so glad they chose me. I LOVE what I do and the terrific people I get to meet. What was cool is they called last minute and I was available. I love Tuesdays! I also love the photo they took of me enjoying a beverage with them. Thanks!!!

Avery & Harrison along with Molly and Mr. B were in for a studio session. Didn't W.C Fields say never work with children or animals? Well I loved it. Bring on the chaos. I had a blast as always and the children seemed to have fun. The dogs behaved and were probably glad when it was over. The entire session lasted less than an hour. Anymore time than that, children get restless and the newness wears off. I kept it lively. The session resulted in three wall canvases the family will cherish forever.

The Falmouth Education Foundation is having its 3rd Winter Gala tomorrow at the Coonamessett Inn, Gifford St., Falmouth. They are a small, nonprofit organization established 5 years ago to provide grants for projects and staff development that are not funded by the school's operating budgets. As a community, we need to support our schools during these difficult financial times. That is why I have donated $300 towards family portraits for the silent auction. I chose the above photo because it exemplifies what I am all about-Families. I LOVE doing family reunions. Nowadays, it's so hard to get everyone together. When you do, trust a true professional photographer to capture the entire group, the grandparents alone, then with the grandchildren, then each family separately. It's fun and results in a wall portrait that is cherished passed down through the generations.

I have been photographing these two beauties since they were infants. Their Mom called this week frantic to get a session in last minute. I was thrilled with an opeing in my schedule. Finally I was able to get together with Caroline and Charlotte at West Falmouth's beautiful Bourne Farm. This session has been rescheduled so many times due to the crazy rainy weather these past weeks. Today was a perfect day. Mom brought a bunch of apples and the girls had fun having their annual "play date with Amy". Their jumpers were so cute with a horsey theme. They were the best models for me yet in the four years we've been doing portraits for the holidays.

Girls In The Garden

I had a terrific session this week with Avery & Hayden. I was their parents wedding photographer years ago. I don't do weddings anymore but I sure do love photographing the children that resulted from those unions. Their mom wanted something different so we went to a local garden. The light was so great and it was a different feel from the beach. The dresses came from Caline For Kids on Main Street, Falmouth
I want to share my love for working at the garden. I am offering sessions for $100. Just mention "the Garden Special". Sessions last 45 minutes and are scheduled for early morning ,8 or 9 AM or 3 or 4 PM.

The Falmouth Street Fair is tomorrow

Yesterday I set up my display in anticipation of the Street Fair that will be held on Main Street, downtown Falmouth, tomorrow. I will be raising donations for Haven For Healing, a local cancer support group. I will be asking for tax deductible donations in lieu of my session fees. Usually charging $175 or more (depending on how many generations), I will give donors a complimentary session with donations of $125 or more. Bring your checkbook and get a deal. If you forget your checkbook, you can mail it in. Haven For Healing helped me exactly a year ago with my battle with cancer, the same type that Farrah Fawcett recently succumbed to. High School Senior and Stage Actor

It was such a pleasure to photographer the former CEO of The Falmouth Chamber of Commerce, Christine Ross and her family. We have known each other for the last five years and I had the great distinction of being the first Chamber Staff Photographer for the 2005 season.
Christine is moving next week to Bonita Springs, Fla. to take over their Chamber of Commerce as president and CEO. She will be missed by the Falmouth business community.

Family From California Rents Wings Neck Lighthouse

How cool to rent a lighthouse! Kirk & Jan from California rented the Wings Neck Lighthouse for Jan's birthday and had their family join them. The ironic thing is that she rented it after reading an article in Coastal Living Magazine two years ago. I subscribe to Coastal Living and had clipped and saved the article (check out the link). Pretty cool. They saw my website, called me and we were all there on a perfect Friday evening just before a perfect Cape Cod sunset. We had a great time and Jan and I really connected.

My husband, Ed, and I were very fortunate to be able to go to Boston last week and see the Red Sox play the Baltimore Orioles. We lost the game but it really didn't matter at all to me. This is only the second game I have ever been to. I was last there 24 years ago. It was over 100 degrees. We were sweaty and sticky but it didn't matter. I was in heaven. We had great seats about 30 rows up on the third base side. Manny received his plaque for hitting his 500th home run. Al Roker threw out a ball and David Ortiz also caught a ball, with his wrist in a cast. J.D. Drew hit a two run home run and then Manny hit another homer right after Drew. It was so loud and sooooooooo much fun. I'm so glad I brought my Canon 20D and 70-300mm IS lens.

Marlo Mae & Ladybug

Karate Kid

I was fortunate enough to photograph Neil doing what he loves. He's a local high school senior on his way this fall to MIT. I have never photographed karate. This six foot plus young man was flying through the air at the studio. He was so great. I'd get a shot, look at it, and them have him do it again. I made him jump at least 30 times. He got a good workout, I got great photographs.

Yet another fun week here at the studio. First was Shamrock the nine week old Chorkie. He was so good at staying still in the basket up until the point it flopped over. He was okay. Modeling can be tough. Just ask Bunker, my Labradoodle. He came up for a brief session. He now barks at me a little to tell me he's tired of being my model. He's almost five years old. Then there was pretty Miss Sophie. She just turned one and is a Portuguese Water Dog. I met her at Joseph's Obedience School in Bourne. She graduated from puppy school.

The Quick Business Head Shot Special is well underway with many local dignitaries taking advantage of the savings. This week the administrators of Historic Highfield Hall were in. Barbara Milligan, the executive director, Janet Totten, deputy director, Robert Wyatt, director of music and Lisa Holmes, chef director. Lots of fun capturing that creative bunch. Also smiling for the camera was Falmouth Selectman, Carey Murphy. He's running for State Representative. Rob Finnerty was back for a new look after a few years. He's on Espn radio up in Boston. I think he's got a great look and personality. I have so much fun connecting with everyone. It's nice having people come to the studio in the quiet time of winter/spring. Pretty soon I'll be dusting off the sand on my feet from being at the beach photographing family portraits. Hard to think of on a day like today when it's barely 30 degrees outside!

I had a chance recently to work with Mark Lane of Bayside Kitchens. We photographed an installation for an upcoming advertisement. He and his designer, Robin, are a pleasure to work with. Studio Decorating Update

I've been making the best use of my winter down time by refurbishing the studio. New rugs, pillows, portrait samples, and nautical props. The camera/viewing room has some new backgrounds and paint. There are still some areas to work on. I have the rest of February to get that done. The studio will reopen for indoor sessions March 1st. Watch for the specials!

New Year's Day Nuts!

It takes a special type of person (or someone hungover) to go running into the ocean when it's 20 degrees out, not to mention a wind chill factor that made it about 10 degrees. Hats off, and coats, to my terrific chiropractor Sean Gallagher. This was a Rotary fund raiser. Way to go! Burrrrrr!!!

The Georgia Aquarium
A trip to Atlanta is not complete without visiting The Georgia Aquarium. Just 3 blocks from my hotel. As a Pieces, I felt completely at home in this aqua environment. It was a fabulous place to visit. I was hard to chose just a few photos.

I met some great people and shared food and photo stories. I learned the value of a good accountant and bookkeeper and the immensity of QuickBooks. Walked through the Olympic Park on my way to CNN headquarters. Took a tour there and saw breaking news. The photo with the big tower is the Westin Hotel where I dined on the 72nd floor in a revolving restaurant with another female photographer. We wished our husbands were there because it was pretty romantic.

Photography Seminar in Atlanta

I'm in Atlanta at the Professional Photographers of America world headquarters in downtown Atlanta. Tall modern buildings. I'm attending a small class about studio management and being organized in business. It's been enough to boggle my brain! Very good information. I wish I had taken this class 20 years ago.
I visited the World of Coca Cola. Fascinating place. Got to taste all sorts of Coke products from around the world. Some weird, mango-kiwi soda, some great, diet black cherry soda.

Photo Education in NYC

I attended the PhotoExpo at the Javitz Center in Manhattan this week with my good friend and colleague, Dianne Marshall. We learned a lot and saw many photo experts and friends involved in the wonderful profession we have chosen.
We were especially pleased about talking to and having a photograph with David Jay. He is a visionary in our industry plus a genuinely nice guy! See how excited we are?
The rooftop of the Comfort Inn was a great place to see a lot of New York. We even had a view of the Hudson River.
Learned a lot and have even more to learn with all the software I purchased.

The Miracle of Life

What a joy for Claudine, Chris & Caleigh last week to add baby Brooke to their family. Claudine was in two weeks ago, very pregnant and ready for Brooke. She gave birth on May 16th and was back in the studio with the youngest portrait client I've ever had in the past 21 years. At 9 days old, Brooke was an angel. She slept through the entire session!

Busy Week With the Doggies!

This has been the most fun! So many happy doggies. Young ones, teenagers and one notable grand older babe named Jasmine. Her Mom works at Hot Diggity in Mashpee Commons. She's so lucky to have all sorts of treats to taste. It's a great store. Stop by and say hi to Nicole the owner.
Wooffotos.com, my new site just for dog portraits, is almost ready to launch. I'm just waiting for my logo to be transfered, find the Patti Page "How much is that Doggie in the Window" MP3, and finish the various pages. Here's a sample of some of the sessions from this past week.

Professional Photographers of Rhode Island Convention

What a wonderful time I had last weekend with my fellow Cape photographers at the Viking Hotel in Newport. We learned from some of the top new photographers in the country. New ideas, new looks, new ways of doing what I already do. It's about to be my 21st year in business and I still LOVE learning. So much has changed for my studio in the last four years of being digital. How did I ever use film? I gave away all of my film this week to a young man I met at a local camera store. I gave him my card and was thrilled when he called. He reminded me of myself at 17 spending all of my allowance on film and processing. In the end, it all paid off.

It Finally Snowed!!!

Here we are near the end of February and we finally had a decent snow. Yeah for my hubby and his plow. Bunker couldn't wait to get out and play. He loves the snow. He loves to romp and roll and eat the stuff. It really was beautiful. There's a quiet to the snow. It muffles the usual sounds. It is so nice to see everything white.

This is my very first attempt at my very own blog. I am excited because I found out about this site from a great seminar at the Professional Photographers of Massachusetts annual convention today. Cool! I learned a lot this weekend at the convention. I love portrait photography and all the great people I get to meet through my photography. I sure am lucky to get to do what I love.

I'm also very fortunate to have such a good friend, Dianne Marshall, who took this fabulous portrait of me. I just love it and am using it in lots of places. I want everyone to see that I am a fun and happy photographer and that a potential client will have fun and relax in front of my camera.
